    Injury is the leading cause of death and hospitalizations for people up to 45 years of age and is the leading cause of years of lost life and lost productivity. Injuries can result in substantial disabilities and impairments that affect an individuals quality of life.

    All injuries are preventable. Faculty and students at the Illinois Center for Injury Prevention work to analyze data related to injuries in the general population and recommend interventions to prevent such injuries. Depending on the cause of injury, policy changes, safety guards or equipment, environmental separation of hazards, and personal protection are all effective means of reducing injuries, saving lives and preventing disabling conditions.

    Projects currently being conducted:

    • Trends and geographic changes in violent injuries in Illinois
    • Impact of Poison Center involvement in reducing medical complications, length of hospitalization and cost following exposure to a poisons
    • Scope of injuries from the street to the hospital
    • Description of facial injuries resulting in outpatient and inpatient hospital care
    • Change in mortality risk in persons suffering repeated violent injuries
    • Living in a food desert and its impact on severity of injury in older adults following a fall
    • Alcohol and Injury: The Relationship of Alcohol and In-Hospital Mortality Following Acute Injury
